Men’s Merino Wool Base Layers – FAQs

Q: How should a base layer fit?
A: Your base layer should sit close to the skin for best performance — snug enough to wick away sweat and hold warmth, but never so tight that it restricts movement. Think of it as a comfortable, flexible “second skin” that moves easily with your body.

Q: Is there a difference between base layers and thermals?
A: Not really. Both are designed to do the same thing — help you stay warm and dry by holding in body heat while drawing moisture away from your skin. “Base layer” is the more modern term, commonly used for technical or outdoor wear, while “thermals” is the older name often used for heavier, cold-weather garments.

Q: Can I wear a base layer on its own?
A: Absolutely. Wilderness Wear base layers are made to look as good as they feel. On milder days or during high-intensity activity, they can be worn solo for lightweight comfort and freedom of movement — perfect for hiking, running, or just relaxing outdoors.

Q: Which are the coolest to warmest base layers
A: Wilderness Wear base layers come in four weights, this makes it easy to pick the right base layer for any temperature or activity.
Cumulo Merino Ultralight – Soft, lightweight, ideal for mild weather and active use.
Merino Light – Best for cool to moderate conditions.
Merino Mid – Versatile midweight for a wide range of weather.
Merino Max – Heaviest option, perfect for very cold or extreme conditions.
